History:: Pensacola, like most ECHL teams, has its roots elsewhere. The forerunners of the Ice Pilots, the Nashville Knights, began play in 1989 as one of the ECHL's first three expansion teams. The Knights drew a loyal, if limited following to the ancient Municipal Auditorium. The high water mark for the team was the 1992-93 campaign when forward Trevor Jobe demolished the league record book with 85 goals and 161 points, when he wasn't being called up by the parent IHL team! The ownership of the IHL's Atlanta Knights bought out the Nashville franchise and tried to improve attendance. They were unable to overcome the myriad problems of "The Aud" and could not afford the rents at the brand new Nashville Arena, so the team moved to Pensacola in 1996. Year one in Florida saw the new Ice Pilots rank among the league leaders in attendance and advance to the Kelly Cup semifinals. The Pilots are also considered among the very best where community relations are concerned. Meanwhile, Nashville has gone crazy for the NHL's Predators.
