History:: The Pride is one of the five charter ECHL members, having previously been incarnated as the Knoxville Cherokees. The 'Kees had a long and distinguished history, highlighted by two regular season championships and being the team that Manon Rheaume, professional hockey's first female player, minded the net for. Eventually, the Cherokees outgrew their home at the cramped Knoxville Civic Coliseum, and moved to Florence when they could not secure a new arena in east Tennessee. The "Pee Dee" refers to the Pee Dee River valley of northeastern South Carolina, where Florence is located, while Pride represents a pride of lions, the team mascot.
