History:: The ECHL admitted Charlotte as an expansion entry for the 1993-94 season. The Checkers proved to be an immediate hit in the Queen City, averaging over 8,000 fans per game in their inagural season. They continue to be a popular draw, holding their own against NASCAR, the NBA's Hornets, and the NFL's Panthers, while providing a stable tenant for the Independence Arena, once considered obsolete after the Charlotte Colusieum was finished. The crowning achievment in franchise history was the Riley Cup victory over Jacksonville to complete the 1995-96 season, the most succesful (94 regular season points) in team history.
