History:: The Rivermen became members of the ECHL in 1996 after being members of the IHL for 14 seasons. As the IHL grew and shifted its focus to larger cities such as Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, etc., the Rivermen found themselves struggeling to compete on the ice and financially. Peoria has done very well in the ECHL, and community support is good. However, the Rivermen have no real geographic rivals in the league, and team officials have flirted with the idea of moving up to the American Hockey League.
