History:: The Nailers trace their roots back to one of the ECHL's original 5; the Carolina/Winston-Salem Thunderbirds. The T'birds were the first league champions, but soon found themselves crowded out of the Triad market by the Greensboro Monarchs. In 1992, the team relocated to West Virginia, but kept the Thunderbirds moniker. The team has been very successful, but has a history of being snakebit in the playoffs. They suffered the biggest upset in ECHL playoff history in 1995. Coming off of their 3rd Brabham Cup, the T'Birds were upset in round one by the #16 seed Birmingham Bulls. In fall of 1996, the team became the Nailers in honor of one of the most important products produced in Wheeling.
